This work stands as a testament to Charles Alphonse Gagnon’s enduring fascination with Mont Saint-Michel. Likely created en plein air to capture the immediacy of light and atmosphere, it is believed to be a preparatory study for two of his major canvases: Mont-Saint-Michel, Morning (1908) and Mont Saint-Michel, Brittany (circa 1928). The same view is also depicted in Gagnon’s renowned 1907-1908 etching, Mont Saint-Michel, underscoring the significance of this iconic subject in his body of work. Through fluid brushwork and thoughtful composition, Gagnon captures the spiritual and timeless essence of one of France’s most storied landmarks. This particular interpretation offers insight into his artistic process, revealing how he worked directly from nature to refine and develop the larger, more detailed masterpieces that followed.
