Fine art publications such as Birds of Canada are, in many ways, the perfect synthesis of A.J. Casson’s fine art and commercial art practices. Casson spent over 35 years as a commercial artist and designer, eventually rising to Vice President and Art Department Head at Sampson Matthews Limited, one of Canada’s foremost commercial art firms. Published by M.B. Loates, Toronto, in 1980, and set in a linen and leather portfolio housed in a linen bound slip-box, this work includes eight individual silkscreen prints, signed and editioned by the artist, as well as an introduction by noted art historian and Casson expert Paul Duval. The extremely high quality and attention to detail present in these large format art-books are a testament to both Casson the artist and Casson the craftsman.
