In the early 1970s, pioneer West Coast modernist Gordon Smith transitioned from hard-edge abstraction into landscape-based painting. In his treatment of form, he was influenced by the work of American Abstract Expressionist artist Richard Diebenkorn, whose landscapes were divided into loose geometric planes. Smith began a series of semi-abstracted landscapes characterized by grid-like colour bands and a revitalized handling of paint, which had transformed to expressionist and brushy. Tidal Place derives from this long, lyrical series, but shows a relaxing of his previously more defined planes, and more of a sense of three dimensionality. Smith’s suggestion of form and his style of brush-strokes is fluid, almost languid, and his use of colour is sensual and inclusive of many warm tones. Land and water mingle, and Smith expands our eye outward over the inter-woven planes of tidal flats to a layered sky of blue and purple. Tidal Place, lyrical and vibrant, is a fine example of this series.
