PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Ontario

Franz Johnston painted throughout Ontario, in settings both rural and wild. In the early 1930s, he moved with his family to settled land around Balm Beach, a small farming and resort village near Midland on the shores of Georgian Bay. Here he built a studio and cabins, and taught art in the summers while working on his own painting. He also took many trips to northern Ontario, sketching at and around the fishing camp of his friend Jack McCurdy on Onaman Lake, near Lake Nipigon. Cabins and wilderness camps appeared in his images, as here, with the weathered old structures and split-wood fence. There is a feeling of nostalgia in this work, reinforced by the title, which expresses Johnston's appreciation for this cultivated countryside. The figures by the door of the house add another warm human element. Although it is overcast, the light is strong, and slivers of brilliant blue-green sky showing through rents in the clouds are a striking colour element in this evocative work.
