Daphne Odjig has long been heralded as a prominent First Nations artist in Canada. She is the only female member of the Woodlands School, and is a founder of the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporation - known as the Indian Group of Seven. While her work is related stylistically to her First Nations peers, using well-defined areas of uniform bright colours, flat planes of space and black outlines, her subjects are quite different. Scenes of family life, motherhood, birth and death form an important aspect of her work. Growing up in Wikwemikong, there were women on the band council and equality was something that was expected. Mother and Child is a strong work from this part of her oeuvre, in which Odjig emphasizes the loving interdependence of the figures by showing them in a warm embrace. The halo-like shape above the mother's head conveys a sense of spirituality and harmony, indicative of Odjig's belief in the strength of family life.
