Paul Duval writes, "In a country of vast distances, the romance and reality of going from one place to another is culturally omnipresent. Danby has often caught in his paintings the traveller on the move, in mid-passage, and at rest…in On His Way Danby has captured a romantic commonplace of the mechanized twentieth century, where the automobile has replaced the riverboat and black streams of asphalt take precedence over water."
