This fine watercolour by Walter J. Phillips was originally acquired by Donald Cameron and passed down through his family. Cameron founded the Banff Arts Centre in 1936, and was the director there until he retired in 1969. Cameron and his family were neighbours and friends with the Phillips family when they lived in Banff. Phillips joined the Banff Summer School as an instructor in 1940, and continued teaching there until 1949, taking his students out into the landscape in good weather to sketch on the spot. In 1946, he built a home in Banff, and he produced a fine body of work based on the stunning Rocky Mountain scenery there. Roger Boulet wrote, “Walter loved Banff. The house on a lower flank of Tunnel Mountain overlooked the town and the Bow Valley and faced the setting sun…Of all sketching locations, Phillips preferred the ‘West Road,' a paved road meandering along the Vermillion Lakes, west of Banff, and leading eventually to Johnson’s Canyon.”

Cameron was also a well known politician, who was appointed to the Senate in 1955.
