On verso there is a label with the following text:

This is one of the paintings saved by the efficient work of the London Fire Brigade and with the co-operation of the night staff of Messrs. Walpole's, when incendiary bombs dropped through the roof of the Cooling Galleries, 92 New Bond Street, about twelve o'clock one night.

Most of the paintings were safely transferred to shipping agents, from whence they were in the safe hands of the British Navy. Proving that despite the heaviest and most sustained bombing attack in the history of the world, Britain Delivered the Goods, September, 1940.
