Doris McCarthy was an ambitious adventurer and documentarian. She travelled extensively throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East, and following her retirement from teaching in 1972 began making sketching trips to the remote Canadian North. Those who knew McCarthy recall her as intrepid force: a determined and adventurous spirit, whose curiosity is manifest in the breadth and richness of her impressive body of work.

“Twice Around the World: Works by Doris McCarthy” comes to Heffel from a private collector and personal friend of the artist, committed to the promotion of McCarthy’s legacy. The works included were acquired directly from McCarthy’s Estate in 2019, and since then, the inspired patron has donated more than 400 artworks to the University of Toronto Scarborough’s Doris McCarthy Gallery. The thoughtful division of the collection ensures McCarthy’s work is comprehensively represented in the public domain and accessible to scholars, art professionals and the community. Heffel is honoured to present a select group of works from this important collection for private collectors to embrace and enjoy.
