A realist painter and leading figure of the Hague School, Anton Mauve often went to the countryside to study and paint nature en plein air. A great interpreter of Dutch scenery, his best-known paintings are of peasants working in fields, with cattle or flocks of sheep, which are simple yet evocative, and focus on the bond between man and nature. In Man and Cows in Pasture, Mauve’s careful attention to detail and ability to capture the natural light through warm, muted tones, displays perfectly the artist’s status as a master colourist.
