PROVENANCE
Sold sale of Canadian Art, Ritchie’s, Toronto, November 30, 1992, lot 180
Private Collection, Ontario

During Emily Carr’s life in Victoria, British Columbia, Beacon Hill Park served as a restorative and creative haven. Having spent her childhood years living nearby, she was intimately familiar with this coastal view. Carr would frequent the tranquil seaside paths throughout her life to sketch freely outdoors. In From Beacon Hill, Carr has captured the contemplative atmosphere of her beloved locale. Through her depiction of the soft grassy slopes, the delicate palette and the subtle wisps of the foamy blue waves in the distance, Carr has shared with us a sense of the natural ambience and quietude of this view.
