EXHIBITED

This fine work is one of 20 oil paintings from Gaston Roullet's trip to Canada in 1887. The subject is Glacier Crest, a mountain peak in Rogers Pass, BC near the famous Canadian Pacific Railway hotel Glacier House which operated until 1925. Glacier House was expanded twice, in 1892 and 1904, and was built before its better-known sister properties, the Banff Springs and Hotel Vancouver, and was the inspiration for the Chateau Lake Louise.

Roullet was a CPR-sponsored artist, and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary has two of his paintings in their collection. Roullet exhibited 20 oil paintings and 30 watercolours of Canadian scenes at the Georges Petit gallery in Paris in 1888.

Copies of the exhibition and literature references for this work, along with a copy of Le Monde Illustre from April 14, 1888 are included with this lot. Three images of Roullet's works are reproduced on page 232 of Le Monde Illustre, and his exhibition at Galerie Georges Petit is mentioned on page 235.
