The settlement of Port Radium on Great Bear Lake became associated with several important Canadian artists when they were invited to paint at and around that site by Gilbert LaBine, the founder of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, and a prominent art collector. Maurice Haycock, then an employee of the Federal Department of Mines, was one of the artists to whom the invitation was extended, along with other Canadian landscape painters such as Franz Johnston and A.Y. Jackson. Haycock accompanied Jackson on multiple trips to Port Radium during the 1950s. They worked alongside each other and attended social receptions and events, and it was a friendship that greatly influenced Haycock's works. Rather than being commissioned, the artists invited to stay at Port Radium would give the Eldorado company selected works as a token of their appreciation for their host’s generous hospitality. It is from these paintings that LaBine's collection grew to include great works from Haycock and Jackson that captured the distinctive northern Canadian landscape.

Please note: an Eldorado Nuclear Limited pamphlet about the site and the artist program accompanies this lot.
