David Blackwood’s monotypes (or monoprints) are a fascinating part of his printwork output. In the midst of building a new studio, without access to his printing press, the artist maintained his practice by experimenting with monoprinting. The media as applied to the printing plate and transferred to paper allows for one unique printed image, without the necessity of the mechanics of a press. These monotypes allow Blackwood the fluid, gestural qualities and vibrant palette found in his paintings and watercolours, bridging the gap between painting and printing.

The works by David Blackwood in this session comprise some of the most carefully selected examples possible. This meticulously assembled collection was built by collectors who were often given the opportunity to select their impressions in advance of exhibitions, allowing them to choose the strongest, most pristinely printed works. Their selections were then archivally framed, many by the noted Emmett’s Frames of Toronto, maintaining their ideal condition.
