The whale is one of the most central and recognizable motifs in David Blackwood’s work. The most celebrated use would be in the artist’s iconic Fire Down on the Labrador, although these works all share a common expression. The whale, ancient and aloof, dwarfs the human figures and their circumstances. In this way, this theme can be viewed within the tradition of the Vanitas, underlining the fragility and transience of human life.
