Jessie Webster grew up in the Nuu-chah-nulth community of Ahousat, British Columbia, and learned the traditional art of basket weaving from her mother and others in the village. Maquinna hats were worn by high-ranking members of the Nuu-chah-nulth, and were were named after a powerful chief who participated in the negotiations between the Spanish and British explorers in the late 1700s, during their conflict over who would claim the land on the northwest coast that became British Columbia.
