The verso of this work includes the following inscription:
"Prior to leaving for Greece in 1962 I left a few canvas work at the art school. The masonite works were left with my brother who had agreed to store them in his basement. He used some of them to build a wall so most had a few nail holes to fill. This work had the end sawed off. There was another one the family used to clean their brushes on. At his death I was able to retrieve a few of the works with some of the best ones going to his family. At this point I don’t know whether they exist, or who has them. I have a special place in my heart for this work returned from the scrap heap. It is not often an artist is granted the opportunity to rescue one of his children given up for lost. Trying a variety of solutions I have finally restored the work to its original state to my satisfaction." - Ted Godwin
