Sepia toned works by J.W. Beatty, such as this were likely created to be reproduced as illustrations for magazine print articles. Printing reproduction techniques of the time favoured sepia or greyscale tones in order to maintain the truest fidelity to the original image. It was a common practice for many artists of the era; both A.J. Casson and Franklin Carmichael were commissioned to produce oil sketches exclusively in black, white, and grey for the sole purpose of printed reproductions. Works such as these speak to the strong tradition of commercial art and design within Canadian art history.

Please note: this work is unframed and the full dimensions of the board are 20 3/8 x 15 1/4 inches.
