Tanabe excels in painting atmospheric aquascapes of the straits and seaside hills that lay along the Vancouver Island coast. Queen Charlotte Summer captures this landscape in Tanabe’s typically reduced, near-abstract approach to realism, eschewing visible brush strokes to create a smooth, floating landscape. The deep black-grey of the water emphasizes the stillness of the scene - the low ceiling of bluer cloud compressing the mists swirling around the distant peaks. A scant sliver of light runs across the canvas, evidence of a break in the cloud cover, placing the horizon on the opposite shore while the edge of an island or cape on the right border locates the midground. These are the only evidence of solid ground, and locates the viewer against the otherwise bottomless stillness and receding depths.
