This work was painted in the summer of 1886, around Pont-Aven, where Peel had studio space in the same chateau used by Paul Gauguin. This work may well be the titled "Twilight Brittany" sold at the Oliver Coates sale and auction of Peel’s work held October 15, 1890, when it was purchased by a "M Coll" for $21.

We thank Victoria Baker, author of Paul Peel: A Retrospective, 1860 – 1892, for assisting with the research of this lot.
