Margaret Shelton was born in Bruce, Alberta in 1915. From 1934 to 1943 she studied under H.G. Glyde and A.C. Leighton at the Alberta Provincial Institute of Technology and Art. In 1941 she learned woodblock printing techniques directly from one of Canada’s masters of the form, W.J. Phillips. Shelton became well known as an excellent printmaker, particularly celebrated for her woodcut and linocut prints of the Eastern Rockies and contributed an enduring body of work to the legacy of Canadian printmaking.

A solo show of her work was held at the Burnaby Art Gallery in 1981, and in 1985 a retrospective exhibition, Margaret Shelton: Block Prints 1936-1984, was held at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary upon her passing. Her works are held in the collections of the National Gallery, the Glenbow Museum, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
