Of the many motifs in the work of Jack Bush, or “formats” as he referred to them, this example falls within the Sash format, which were generally produced between 1963 and 1966. The inspiration for this format was reportedly a sash tied around the waist of a shop-window mannequin, and from this everyday encounter Bush made paintings that use abutting colour, geometry, and negative space to expand his exploration of colour and form.
The above essay was provided by Heffel. This work will be included in Dr. Sarah Stanners’s forthcoming Jack Bush Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné.
