This fine work was painted while Frank Johnston was still a member of the Group of Seven. It is the kind of classic panoramic view favoured by the Group, here sweeping over an expanse of water and strips of wooded land and distant hills up into a cloud-filled sky. A sense of elemental exhilaration in the depiction of wild landscapes had been forged during sketching trips such as the Group boxcar trips to Algoma, which Johnston took part in during 1918, 1919 and 1920. In 1921, Johnston left Toronto for Winnipeg to take a dual position as the principal of the city's school of art and director of its art gallery. He continued to paint, spending summers sketching at such locations as Lake of the Woods and Lake Manitoba. Johnston had a fine eye for the effects of light, as seen in this sublime oil. As indicated by the title of the work, Johnston has caught the light at the turn into early evening, as the landscape cools into blues and purples, but still retains the sun’s warmth reflected in the clouds.
