Marcelle Ferron was a prominent figure in Quebec modern art and a signatory of the 1948 Refus global manifesto. Her abiding fascination with light and colour was expressed in stained glass works as well as in paintings. These untitled works (lots h015 and h016) from the 1980s attest to Ferron’s powerful use of colour and to the importance of the gestural in her work. Here the colours are laid down on top of each other, yielding highly expressive works that display the overflowing energy and spontaneity she was known for.We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Musée d’art Contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.
