Fernand Toupin, a signatory of the Plasticiens manifesto in 1955, initially came to prominence with works rooted in geometric abstraction. But as the 1950s came to an end he changed direction radically, working rich textures into his canvases and abandoning for a time geometric composition. With their dominating white fields and thick granular media, Pointe au rouge and Arrière-pays are very typical of Toupin’s work in the 1970s. We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Musée d’art Contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.
