PROVENANCE
Collection of Hudson's Bay Company, Canada

One square china plate, printed with black and white map of Canada showing the route of the first shipment of china to Churchill took through the Hudson's Bay.

These dishes were produced by Alfred Meakin to mark the occasion of an historic opening up of a direct shipping route between England and the port of Churchill in Hudson Bay, Canada. The First Cargo ship to enter Churchill, Manitoba was the British Freighter "Farnworth" of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, owned by the Dalgleish Line. It docked on September 10th, 1931 and loaded a cargo of Manitoba wheat before continuing to Montreal. It was also carrying a consignment of Staffordshire china made by Alfred Meakin.
