PROVENANCE
Collection of Hudson's Bay Company, Canada

LITERATURE
David Burnett, Colville, 1983, pages 157 and 160, reproduced page 131

Animals play an important part in Colville’s work, and half of his serigraphs contain them, both wild and domestic. Colville always had cats and dogs in his household, feeling that “without animals everything is incomplete.” Burnett writes: “For Colville the animal world stands as an example both of the notion of wholeness and of the acceptance of limitations.” In this work, Colville’s cat stares out at the viewer, aware and self-contained, completely alive in the moment.
