LITERATURE
Eskimo Graphic Art 1960, 1971, reproduced, unpaginated
Jean Blodgett, Kenojuak, 1985, reproduced catalogue #3

Kenojuak Ashevak was a pioneering artist in the Cape Dorset printmaking tradition, a movement that rose to prominence in the mid-20th century. She launched her career in the early 1960s and quickly become known for her masterful use of negative space. In Geese Frightened by a Fox, this technique is on full display, creating a dynamic sense of movement and energy. The print captures a moment of sudden chaos as a fox startles a group of geese, their bodies frozen in mid-motion. Ashevak’s thoughtful use of empty space guides the viewers eye through the scene, emphasizing the relationship between the animals and their surroundings. This balance between open and filled areas not only heightens the tension but also lends the image a sense of weightlessness – you can almost hear the beat of their wings as the geese take flight.
