PROVENANCE
Legs Madeleine Poliseno-Pelland Bequest

Alfred Pellan’s contribution to modern set design in Quebecois theatre was tremendous. Though he only collaborated on three productions, Pellan’s work paved the way for set designers, and several years later, allowed them to break away from naturalistic representation and enter into a decidedly modern theatre aesthetic. In 1968, Jean-Louis Roux, the new art director at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM), suggested that Pellan recreate the costumes and décor from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (La nuit des rois), which he had designed in 1946 for the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent theatre troop. Consequently, the artist was given the use of a studio, assistants, cutters, seamstresses and painters in order to help him achieve, by the best means possible, what he had imagined in 1946. Inspired by designs created for both productions, the prints of this corpus were collected in the book Sept Costumes et un décor pour “La Nuit des Rois” de Shakespeare, which was published in 1971.
