After moving to Vancouver Island in 1980, Takao Tanabe began a series of atmospheric coastal panoramas. Traveling by boat between the mainland and the Island, Tanabe was inspired to capture the views of distant landforms and ocean mists on canvas. He began painting with a reductive realism that captured the sublime essence of British Columbia’s coastal landscape. In this view of Johnstone Strait, Tanabe reveals the sky and mountain tops in the mirrored surface of the ocean. The coastline and sky are depicted in swaths of cool blues, verdant greens, long horizontal forms and soft white light, creating an expansive, meditative and transcendant space.
