PROVENANCE
Courtesy of the Artist and Monte Clark, Vancouver

This work is edition 3/3.

Stephen Waddell is known for his images of urban scenes created in Canada and Europe that deliberately exist in a place of ambiguity. He combines the realist history of early modern painting with that of early street photography to create considered studies of anonymous figures working, relaxing, and moving through the urban environment. His observational methods can be seen in the work Snail Seller, where a lone figure bends down to weigh the value of his stock. Waddell’s photographs are a careful consideration of scale and light, revealing the artist’s deep knowledge of the painterly precedents to photography.

Waddell has exhibited locally and internationally at venues such as Monte Clark, Vancouver; Vancouver Art Gallery; Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló, Spain; and Kunstforum Baloise, Basel, amongst others. Waddell’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery; Armand Hammer Collection, Los Angeles; and National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. In 2016, Waddell created a site-specific public art installation for the BC Hydro Dal Grauer Substation as part of Capture Photography Festival. Waddell was the recipient of the 2019 the Scotiabank Photography Award. He lives and works in Vancouver.
