Kazuo Nakamura was a Japanese Canadian painter and an original member of Painters Eleven, the influential Toronto-based group of non-objective artists formed in the 1950s. While many in the group embraced bold, gestural abstraction, Nakamura’s work stood apart for its quiet precision and structured compositions. His paintings are often minimalist, rendered in limited or monochromatic palettes, and reflect a deep curiosity about the natural world and its underlying order. Science played a central role in his thinking. He saw parallels between scientific and artistic patterns and sought to express this connection through his work.

In Toronto 4 (Inner Structure), Nakamura restricts his palette to shades of blue and constructs the image around a carefully measured grid. The title reflects his interest in the hidden frameworks that govern the universe—structures that lie beneath the surface of what we see. For this early series, he used unconventional tools like razor blades and the edges of cardboard dipped in paint to create crisp, rhythmic lines.

The inscription notes that this painting was a study for a public commission for the Toronto International Airport (now Toronto Pearson)—one of only two public projects the artist undertook. Galaxies, comprising two suspended, interlocking metal grids, hung in Terminal 1 until its closure in 2004.
