PROVENANCE
The PSBGM Cultural Heritage Foundation

In his city scenes – most often set in Quebec, but here in Ontario – Robert Pilot was known for his delicate atmospheres, even overcast light and muted colours. Pilot was a great admirer of Canadian Impressionist painter James Wilson Morrice, whose influence can be seen in the softly brushed, loosely defined figures on the street. However, Pilot developed his own style of Impressionism, soft and suffused with clear Canadian light, as seen in this tranquil urban scene.
