On the verso of this drawing on the cardboard backing is the inscription, “Lismer drawing of Lawren Harris chopping the tree down to make the painting around stump - which did win 1st prize when exhibited - N. Shore Lake Superior painting.” The notation “1st” on the front of the work refers to Harris’s masterwork North Shore, Lake Superior, in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, which won a $500 Museum of Art prize in a 1931 international juried group show of contemporary art at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Arthur Lismer was known in the Group of Seven and their artistic circle for his humorous cartoon drawings. At the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, Lois Darroch writes, “Whenever Lismer lunched there, laughter erupted continuously, either because of the cartoon sketches he could throw off as easily as he cut a slice of bread, or from the outrageous quips that bubbled from him.” Spontaneous drawings such as Well - That’s That provide insight into the playful camaraderie of Lismer’s artistic milieu at the time.
