Sam Francis
Sam Francis
1923 - 1994
Best known for his vibrant, colourful abstract paintings, Francis’s style is often linked to Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, Impressionism and the Parisian Art Informel movement. His artistic exploration began following his brief service in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Not long after he enlisted, he was injured in a plane crash, and began painting during his recovery in the hospital. He was influenced by artists like Jackson Pollock Mark Rothko and Clyford Still, and later associated with Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and their contemporaries. Francis’s works are held in some of the world’s most renowned museum collections, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim, Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou, the Kunstmuseum Basel and many more.
