Helen Frankenthaler
Helen Frankenthaler
1928 - 2011
Helen Frankenthaler was a second generation American Abstract Expressionist painter, and is among the most celebrated Post-War artists of all time. Born in Manhattan, she first became active in the 1950s New York School. She was influenced by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Koonig and other important artists. As she rose to fame with her iconic colour-stain method of applying thin layers of paint to unprimed canvas, her own works became the inspiration for internationally renowned Colour Field painters, including Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis. It was around this time in the 1960s when Clement Greenberg, the highly influential critic who admired Frankenthaler’s work, promoted and included her in several exhibitions. Her artistic style was constantly evolving, as she worked and exhibited over more than six decades. In addition to painting, Frankenthaler explored ceramics and sculpture, and also became known for her printmaking - specifically creating exceptional contemporary woodcuts. Her works have been the subject of important exhibitions and retrospectives, both solo and group shows, and highlight museum collections globally.
