William Scott
William Scott
1913 - 1989
Born in Scotland and raised in Nothern Ireland, William Scott is considered one of Britain’s most important artists. He was primarily a painter, producing mostly oil on canvas and gouache on paper works. Scott explored many subjects throughout his artistic career, including nudes and landscapes, but is best known for his minimalist still lifes of everyday kitchen items - plates, pans, utensils and simple pieces of food. Inspired by modernism, prehistoric art and many of the artistic greats including Henri Matisse, Jean-Siméon Chardin and Amedeo Modigliani, Scott explored the relationships between form, space and colour, and blurred the lines between figurative and abstract. Scott’s celebrated works continue to show in exhibitions around the world, and are held in the collections of renowned museums including the Tate, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
