Thoreau MacDonald
1901 - 1989
CGP CPE
Thoreau MacDonald was a gifted graphic illustrator, designer and painter who lived in Toronto. His father was Group of Seven painter and founding member J.E.H. MacDonald. J.E.H. was a major influence to Thoreau, who was artistically self-taught.
Colour blindness forced him to work mainly in shades of black and white. His illustrations were precise, detailed and categorized Canadian illustration of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Landscapes were his main subject source with a focus on his homeland of Ontario.
