Annie Pootoogook
Annie Pootoogook
1964 - 2016
Settlement: Kinngait (Cape Dorset)
Annie Pootoogook started drawing in 1997, recording events of her daily life both prosaic and horrific – shopping, hanging up a coat and watching television, to scenes of spousal abuse. She has grown up in a milieu in which artmaking was a daily activity first for her grandmother and then her mother and father. Pitseolak Ashoona and Napachie Pootoogook were both prolific graphic artists, and her father, Eegyvudluk, was a carver and one of the most experienced printers in the Cape Dorset stonecut studio. Since her first solo exhibition at Feheley Fine Arts, Moving Forward in 2003, Annie Pootoogook has rapidly achieved international success. In 2006 alone, she had a solo exhibition at the Power Plant in Toronto; she spent the summer in Scotland as the Glenfiddich Artist in residence; she was the subject of a television documentary by Marcia Connolly and Katherine Knight: and she won the $50,000 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s premier honour for an emerging artist. In 2007 she was one the Canadian artists at documenta XII in Kassel, Germany, the prestigious, cutting-edge, contemporary art exhibition held every five years. An exhibition of her work in 2009 was held in New York City by the National Museum of the American Indian. Annie Pootoogook lived for a time in Ottawa and Montreal, where she did work at Studio PM.
