Greg Hardy
Greg Hardy
1950 -
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1950, Greg Hardy is best known for his dramatic and edgy prairie landscapes. He lives in Saskatoon and keeps a studio at Meacham, Saskatchewan.
Hardy is self taught, and is part of the milieu of serious, accomplished painters that live in Saskatchewan, such as Dorothy Knowles. He participated in the Emma Lake workshops (affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan) regularly between 1973 and 1988. Hardy has been influenced by painters such as David Milne, Milton Avery and Adolph Gottlieb.
Although Hardy produced abstract paintings in the 1970s, as well as more recently, he is principally known for his energetic and expressionistic landscapes of Saskatchewan. He sketches en plein air in the wilderness, often from the vantage point of his kayak and canoe. Energetic and expressionistic, these sketches are used in the studio as references for location, weather and time of day. His work evokes the drama of extremes of weather and light, depicting extraordinary skies full of layered cumulus formations and distinctive hovering clouds, with a heightened colour palette. He has developed a distinctive vocabulary, and his loaded brushwork expresses a passionate urgency. Although he depicts specific locations, he manipulates his images, compressing and tilting space, and he exaggerates his landscape elements such as clouds, which resemble sailing ships or floating sculptures. In 1985 he spent fall and winter in Toronto, and produced a series of still lifes with flowers.
Hardy’s teaching experience includes the University of Alberta in 1987, the Community College System from 1980 to 1982 and the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts from 1975 to 1980.
In 1978, Hardy was commissioned to produce a large-scale clay mural for the exterior of a new Government building in Saskatoon. Hardy has shown in commercial galleries and museums for over 30 years. His work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina, the University of Alberta and Glenbow Museum in Calgary, among many others.
