In 1932, Walter Phillips traveled to the mouth of Kingcome River and to Simoom. Phillips commented, "One night we came to Simoom, a village composed entirely of float houses, with a boardwalk of considerable length connecting them and comprising the Main Street...The boom logs at each end of Simoom were a continuation of the boardwalk and were chained to the shore, restraining any item of the village from any fortuitous excursion upon the high seas."
