Theodosia Dawes Bond Thornton
Theodosia Dawes Bond
Thornton

Theodosia Dawes Bond Thornton was an avid collector of works by members of the Group of Seven, their contemporaries and their predecessors and had both a great art collector's eye and good fortune. She corresponded with a number of these important artists and came to know them personally, purchasing works directly from Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer and Anne Savage. She also collected Frederick Coburn, Edwin Holgate, E.J. Hughes, Arthur Lismer, John Lyman, J.E.H. MacDonald and Albert Robinson, acquiring works from the most important art dealers of her day, including Max Stern, Dominion Gallery, Montreal and G. Blair Laing, Laing Galleries, Toronto. Her estate holds works by Canada's finest painters. Almost all of these works have never been seen outside of her collection, and will offer followers of Canadian art a thrilling new opportunity to view and compete for a rare piece of Canadian history. "Every time we handle a collection like this we are reminded how fortunate Heffel's is, as almost all of these works have never been seen in public since they were acquired shortly after the Second World War. It is hard to believe that this major and dramatic private collection was built for less than $15,000, and today is valued in the millions," remarked David Heffel, President of Heffel's.

Following close on the heels of the record setting November 2009 sale of works from the Helen E. Band / Charles S. Band estate which achieved over $10,000,000, Heffel Fine Art Auction House will be offering 36 outstanding works from the Theodosia Dawes Bond Thornton estate to eager art lovers in their May 26, 2010 Fine Canadian Art auction in the 2010 Olympic City of Vancouver.

Among the works are Lawren Harris's Lake Superior Sketch XXXIII (documented as being bought directly from the artist for $85 on February 3, 1947), estimate $200,000 to $300,000; Mountain Sketch LXX (bought for $130 on January 14, 1947), estimate $250,000 to $350,000 and Arctic Sketch IX, (one of the most expensive Harris panels for Mrs. Thornton to acquire at $500 on December 23, 1959), attractively estimated in today's market at $300,000 to $500,000. All three paintings represent Harris at the height of his landscape work. Another Harris, the impressionistic work Winter, is a rare, early delight, estimated at $300,000 to $500,000, which was acquired by Mrs. Thornton at even trade for another Harris panel at a value of $600, on May 8, 1962 from the Dominion Gallery. In total, seven important Harris oils from the estate will be offered during this historic spring sale.

A.Y. Jackson
A.Y. Jackson
Spring Evening,
Lower St. Lawrence
(Early Spring)

Spring Evening, Lower St. Lawrence (Early Spring) is a classic A.Y. Jackson canvas and depicts one of his beloved painting locations. Robert Heffel, Vice-President comments: "Mrs. Thornton throughout her collecting years was always ahead of the market, and collecting vogue and showed brilliant foresight in trading a Maurice Cullen pastel for this superb Jackson in 1946 at a par value of $350 from Watson Galleries, Montreal. Today, this canvas is conservatively estimated at $175,000 to $225,000."

J.E.H. MacDonald's Rock and Maple 2 is related to his 1916 canvas Autumn Colour (Rock and Maple) in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, and was purchased from the Dominion Gallery for $85 on March 6, 1947. This work is now being offered at $70,000 to $90,000. E.J. Hughes's canvas The West Coast Near Bamfield is an outstanding work from the artist's pinnacle period, dated 1960, and was purchased shortly after being created on May 11, 1961 for a modest $950. It is estimated for auction at $150,000 to $200,000.

As a child, Thornton traveled the rail lines of Canada with her father, who was Vice-President of Canadian National Railways for Eastern Canada, solidifying her love of the distinctive Canadian landscape. This love would be reflected by the art collection she built over her lifetime. "That was the Canada I saw!" she would later say, speaking of her personal connection to her collection. She collected works that reflected the extents of her own travels; thus Lawren Harris sketches of Newfoundland and A.Y. Jackson sketches of the Rockies, such as The Bow River Near Canmore, Cascade Mountain in the Distance, are part of the estate. Thornton was very interested in the indigenous plants of Quebec, and wrote to Arthur Lismer seeking to buy his paintings of tangled undergrowth and wild bracken. These Lismers, of which there are seven in this sale, were favorites in her collection.

While much of the Thornton estate has not been seen before, Pines, Georgian Bay appears in the credits of the 1951 biographical film produced by the National Film Board of Canada on Lismer's work and was later shown at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Mrs. Thornton purchased it directly from the artist on January 13, 1949 for $250. Today this work is estimated at $70,000 to $90,000.

Theodosia Thornton was born in 1915 in Montreal, and was a member of a remarkable family tree. James Pawley Dawes, founder of the Dawes Brewery in Lachine, Quebec; Peter Skene Ogden, author of The Snake River Journals and the famous fur trader and explorer after whom Ogden, Utah was named; Bishop Bond, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada; and Dana Wilgress, Canada's first ambassador to the United Nations, are all names among its branches. "It is quite something to work with a family like this," states Andrew Gibbs, from Heffel's Ottawa office, "family trees in Canada often have short roots, as we are such a young country, but the Thornton/Bond family has quite a remarkable history. As for the artworks, Mrs. Thornton's collection was her passion and her pride, and it is a complete pleasure for us to be in temporary care of it." Some of the works in the estate come through inheritance, and some through her marriage to Robert Buchanan Thornton, as the practice of collecting was long established in both families. It was Mrs. Thornton herself, however, who perfected it. One work in the sale, Island, Lake Superior by Lawren Harris, was given to Mrs. Thornton by a relative, A. Sidney Dawes. Dawes was an avid skier in Montreal, was once President of the Canadian Olympic Association, and in 1960 was invited to search for a British Columbia site for the Canadian bid on the 1968 Winter Olympic Games. He suggested London Mountain, now known as Whistler.

Mrs. Thornton was an accomplished platinum print and colour photographer who trained in New York at the Institute of Photography, and was an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. She earned her Press Pass for Universal Photographers in 1937, and was a Member of the Montreal Camera Club. A talented artist in her own right, her passionate love of the Canadian landscape and the art that captured it nurtured a powerful collection of fine Canadian art.

Theodosia Dawes Bond Thornton died on October 27, 2009 at the age of 93.
