Vancouver March 31, 2009 ~ On Thursday March 26, 2009, Heffel's March Online Auction closed with over $300,000 of Canadian Art sold, which is a testament to the continued strength of the Canadian Art Market. Works by Sybil Andrews, William Kurelek, Dennis Burton and Ted Harrison were included in the two sessions with 105 lots that were offered throughout the month.

The first session included works by internationally famed artist Sybil Andrews. Andrews, a British printmaker who settled on Vancouver Island after World War II and continued printmaking, never made much money from her art while she was alive. But since her death in 1992, her work has gained international acclaim and value, partly due to the publicity of a 2008 exhibition her works were included in entitled Rhythms of Modern Life: British Prints 1914 - 1939 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Her works are now included in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, London , the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum, New York to name a few.

The average price per lot in the first session sale was close to double the estimated price per lot. A stunning 100% of the lots were sold.

One of the highlights of the first session was an important canvas titled Little White Yacht. After competitive bidding for almost 30 overtime minutes, the work sold for an impressive $81,900 (all prices include Buyer's Premium), which is a record for an Andrews oil on canvas. This impressive price was more than quadruple its low estimate of $18,000 - 24,000.

The second session of Canadian Post-War and Contemporary Art offered collectors a unique opportunity to obtain works by a selection of Canada's most progressive artists.

The market remains resilient as many of the works sold at the high end of their estimates. One of the highlights in this session was Skipping Game - Carcross, a brightly coloured acrylic by Ted Harrison, which far exceeded its presale estimate of $3,000 - 4,000, selling for $8,000.

More Sybil Andrews and Canadian Post~War & Contemporary works will be on view in the previews prior to the Spring Live Auction which takes place June 17, 2009 in Vancouver, BC.
