A rare 1969 painting of Williams Lake is headed for the auction block.

E.J. Hughes, who died in January, painted the oil on canvas work titled Williams Lake. One of the province's best-known painters, Hughes painted many different B.C. towns and communities during the 1950s and 1960s.

The interest in his work is increasing and the estimated value of the six paintings up for sale is expected to be $800,000. Williams Lake is estimated to sell for between $100,000 and $150,000.

Also on the auction block will be paintings by another of the province's best-known painters, Emily Carr. The eight Carr paintings are expected to sell above the predicted total of $1,240,000.

The auction of the paintings will be done through Heffel Fine Art Auction and this auction is expected to be the highest grossing sale of Canadian fine art in history.

The auction will take place on May 23 at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel in Vancouver.
