Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal - May 28, 2009
Heffel's May online auction of Fine Canadian Art closed on May 28th with sales of almost $400,000. The bidding was competitive. On the last day of the sale over 380 bids worth $1.3 million dollars vied for a piece of the Canadian Art market.
"We are thrilled with the $400,000 dollar sale in our online auction of Fine Canadian Art, there were numerous bidding wars and we saw a number of superior results" said Robert Heffel, vice-president of Heffel Fine Art Auction House. "This clearly demonstrates the success of our online auctions and our marketing systems."
The highest selling lot in May's online sale was a sketch by Clarence Gagnon entitled Baie St. Paul, Autumn. This fine painting sold for $21,060 including buyer's premium (all figures include the 17% buyer's premium), which more than doubled its estimate of $8,000 - 10,000. Baie St. Paul, with its interesting terrain, was one of Gagnon's favourite painting locations, and this vividly coloured painting epitomizes his work from this region.
The strength of the Canadian Art Market continued with numerous works surpassing the high end of their estimates. John Little's picturesque street scene entitled Rue Drolet sold for $16,380, exceeding its estimate of $8,000 - 10,000. A Stand of Trees at the Water's Edge, a charming small oil on panel by Marc-Aurèle Suzor-Coté, surpassed its estimate of $4,000 - 6,000, selling for $9,360.
Daphne Odjig's work on paper entitled Summer was estimated at $2,000 - 3,000, but sold after a heated bidding war for $8,190. Maxwell Bates's oil painting entitled Picnic near the Sea went for $12,870, doubling the low end of its estimate.
"Our May online auction of Fine Canadian Art showed once again that the Canadian Art Market is resilient, and that our conservative estimates really encouraged bidding" stated David Heffel, president of Heffel Fine Art Auction House.
Heffel's May Online Auction ran for the duration of the month and works were previewed across the country at Heffel's Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal galleries. The sale sessions closed on May 28th at specified times - for more detailed information, please consult the website at www.heffel.com.
Heffel's Spring Auction continues with the Live Auction sale on June 17, with a pre-sale estimate of $6 - 9 million and includes two paintings that are expected to sell for more than $1 million. This live sale is currently being previewed in Toronto and Montreal prior to the Vancouver preview and auction.
Heffel's is the leader in the Canadian art auction field with a record $50 million in sales in 2007. Heffel's has created a National fine art auction house with offices in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and representatives in Calgary and London, England.
