Art Handler

POSITION SUMMARY:

Heffel, Canada’s national fine art auction house, is looking to fill a part-time art handler position in the Vancouver office. This position will be responsible for assisting with art handling, packing, shipping framing and installation requirements from the Vancouver office.
This position would be 3-4 days/week to start, with the possibility of becoming full-time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Fine art packing and shipping including soft packing and crating
• Assist with fine art exhibition preparation and gallery installation; using proper care and knowledge when handling artworks.
• Assist with framing including frame repair, wiring, backing and hardware correction, including safely removing artwork from frame and re-framing
• Pick-up and delivery of artwork, on site packing and installation.
• Working with staff to ensure inventory is being properly managed and stored, including our offsite storage facility
• General gallery and building maintenance. Weekly garbage and recycling.
• Following corporate shipping policies, systems and responsible for the maintenance of shipping records and ensuring shipping deadlines are met.
• Preparing shipment paperwork, booking shipments and preparing shipping quotes for clients.
• Communicating with clients via email regarding shipping quotes and shipment status.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• An understanding of the practice and techniques used for handling, packing, framing, shipping and installing works of art.
• At least two years of experience in a related field including experience handling high dollar value cultural artifacts and artwork in a safe, respectful and archival manner.
• Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field preferred, but not mandatory
• The successful applicant must hold a valid British Columbia driver’s license.
• Must be able to work under pressure and remain calm in high stress situations.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Exceptional customer services skills.
• A fast learner within a dynamic and entrepreneurial business team environment.
• Knowledge of import and export shipping requirements an asset.
• Ability to work as part of a team or individually in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work efficiently with goal of delivering high quality service to clients and colleagues.
• Ability to handle a variety of situations and deadlines in a positive professional manner.
• Carpentry skills an asset, but not mandatory.
• Fluency in French is an asset, but not mandatory.
• Heffel is able to offer additional training for some of the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Senior Fine Art Specialist, Toronto Office

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to Senior Management, the Senior Fine Art Specialist will cultivate and develop relationships with clients, secure consignments for upcoming sales, provide valuations of artwork, contribute to the Fine Canadian and Canadian Post War & Contemporary catalogue and assist with further developing Heffel’s business strategy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Generate business opportunities in association with senior management.
• Liaise with regional offices and internal team members to develop and procure potential consignments.
• Ensure internal systems are in place and being followed.
• Working with offices across the country, ensuring that top down infrastructure is continually in place and coordinated with each office.
• Work with existing senior employees on budgets, sale goals and infrastructure details.
• Mentor, train and develop junior team members.
• Assist with marketing strategy.
• Research property for sale, evaluate, catalogue, produce condition reports.
• Conduct on-site and off-site valuations.
• Provide clients with verbal and written appraisals of artwork.
• Assist with catalogue production, including essay writing, layout, text editing.
• Assist with organization of preview and sale events.
• Offer professional advice and assistance to clients during day-to-day business activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:
• Post-secondary degree in Art History or a related field.
• At least five years experience in a related field and 3 years as a Fine Art Specialist.
• MBA, business degree or finance background is an asset.

SKILLS:
• The candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A proven track record in developing client relationships and generating business.
• A fast learner with an entrepreneurial spirit.
• A team player, with strong organizational skills, and ability to work on tight deadlines.
• Ability to work efficiently with goal of delivering high quality service to clients and colleagues.
• Ability to manage people and processes.
• High level of accuracy is mandatory. Possess an understanding of current trends in the Canadian Art Market.
• Must exercise sound judgment and represent Heffel professionally to clients.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
• Fluency in French and/or Mandarin an asset.
