In a recent review, Kevin Griffin noted: "In 1946, when Joseph Plaskett was a struggling young artist, he received a financial lifeline from the estate of another BC artist. As the recipient of the first Emily Carr [Trust] Scholarship, Plaskett was able to spend a year outside the country studying painting. Three years later, with his career as an artist underway, Plaskett moved to Paris." This setting of this beautiful still life is Plaskett's first apartment in Paris. The interiors of his Paris apartments, first on the Boulevard Saint Germain and later in Marais, were rich and enduring subjects for him. Plaskett comments on his painting, "My work may be said to descend from the Impressionists. What I do share with them is their subject matter - their delight in painting any aspect of life around them.I do find a micro-cosmos of the universe in the interior of a room. Its possibilities are inexhaustible, its variety infinite."
