Krieghoff’s Officer Courting Girl, depicts a classic Quebec habitant scene containing comical and satirical undertones. In this work, a young woman is the object of a Scottish officer’s affection. The young woman could be the daughter or wife of the angry, elder habitant figure with a blue toque seen entering the room by the door to the rear of the central action. The officers of the 71st Highlanders were stationed with the British army in Fort Chambly near Montreal, and found enjoyment in chasing after these demoiselles, much to the panic and dismay of their families. As Harper notes, “it was a situation with considerable humorous potential and Krieghoff took full advantage of it.” Krieghoff often incorporated humour in his work, which greatly appealed to his viewing public.
Krieghoff painted this flirtatious scene in numerous versions, all of which boast similar qualities, including fine characterization in both the facial features and costumes. Two such works are reproduced in J. Russell Harper's and Dennis Reid’s influential studies on Krieghoff.
