In an interesting story regarding the provenance of this work, Jackson, in the winter of 1954, entrusted Spring Flood to his niece Geneva Adair Jackson (nicknamed Dee) to be delivered from his Manotick studio to a lady in Westmount who had commissioned it. Because of a winter storm, the route to Montreal was fraught with difficulty, and Dee took refuge with friends in Senneville. After recuperating with drinks and dinner, Dee showed the couple Spring Flood, and they promptly fell in love with the painting. As promised, Dee then delivered the work to the Westmount collector the next day, who, decided not to purchase the work. Dee returned to Senneville where the couple were delighted to purchase the canvas for $400.
This striking and expansive view across a valley in spring melt expresses Jackson's interest in the rhythms of the land in the serpentine winding of the river, which in flood has created its own course through the landscape.
