In 1951, a retrospective of Lismer’s work reached the West Coast, and was shown at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the art gallery at the University of British Columbia. There is speculation that this attention may have drawn Lismer to take his first trip to the West Coast in the summer of that year. Inspired by the lush primeval rain forest, he would return to Vancouver Island for 16 summers. In July 1952 (the year this work was painted) he went first to Galiano Island, then to Long Beach. Reid writes that Lismer found “it to be a particularly fruitful summer of sketching, and he brought back a number of brilliant oil studies that evocatively exploit the racing lines, tumbling forms and saturated colour that are the hallmarks of his close and intense investigation of fragments of nature.” Lismer canvases of this large size are rare to the market, and adding to the desirability of this work, his sculptural approach to form and vigourous composition recalls the style of his dynamic painting in Georgian Bay in the 1920s and 1930s.
